Friends of the Rosary:

Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, the prophet-saint whose life was an example of humility and courage.

Ordinarily, the universal Church observes the day of a saint’s death as his feast, because that day marks his entrance into heaven. There are two notable exceptions, the birthdays of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist. Why? Mary, in the first moment of her existence, was free from original sin, and John was cleansed of original sin in the womb of his mother Elizabeth.

God wanted to announce to men His own coming through John the Baptist, who represented the Old Covenant and the Law.

John the Baptist was born in a town of Judaea, six months before the earthly birth of Jesus Christ. He came only to prepare the way of the Lord. He preceded the Redeemer and he baptized the author of Baptism (Although sinless, Jesus chose to be baptized in order to identify Himself with the human lot). “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand,” was John’s repeated theme.

Finally, John the Baptist shed his blood gloriously triumphing over the world.

Ave Maria!
Jesus, I Trust In You!
St. John the Baptist, Pray for Us!
