Friends of the Rosary,
Today is the Memorial of St. Alphonsus de Liguori (1696-1787), founder of the preaching order of the Redemptorists, bishop, priest, and doctor of the Church. He was known for contributing to moral theology — he wrote “Moral Theology.”
Alphonsus was a great preacher of the Gospel to the poor. Like our Lord did the Apostles, he sent his Redemptorists to announce the Kingdom of God and work among the country people of Italy, who often lacked the opportunity for missions, religious instruction, and spiritual retreats.
At the age of sixteen, Alphonsus received his doctorate in both canon and civil law and, for nearly ten years, practiced at the bar. When he found that one of the legal cases he was defending was not based on justice but on political intrigue, he gave up law practice and dedicated his life to God.
As bishop of Sant’ Agata dei God, he corrected abuses, restored churches, reformed seminaries, and promoted missions throughout his diocese. His charity and generosity were boundless during the famine of 1763-64.
He is the patron saint of confessors, moral theologians, and vocations.
