We celebrate today, August 6, the Feast of the Transfiguration, an event described in the three Synoptic Gospels (Matthew 17:1–8, Mark 9:2–13, Luke 9:28–36) which foretells the glory of the Lord as God and His Ascension into heaven.
In the gospel accounts, Jesus and three of his apostles, Peter, James, and John, went to a mountain (the Mount of Transfiguration) to pray. On the mountaintop, Jesus began to shine with bright rays of light. Then the Old Testament figures Moses and Elijah appeared, and he spoke with them. Both figures had eschatological roles: they symbolize the Law and the prophets, respectively. Jesus is then called "Son" by the voice of God the Father, as in the Baptism of Jesus.
The Transfiguration anticipates the presence of heaven, where we shall see God face to face.
From the Catechism of the Catholic Church, #554, we learn:
"From the day Peter confessed that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, the Master began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things… and be killed, and on the third day be raised.
Peter scorns this prediction, nor do the others understand it any better than he does. In this context, the mysterious episode of Jesus' Transfiguration takes place on a high mountain, before three witnesses chosen by himself: Peter, James, and John. Jesus' face and clothes become dazzling with light, and Moses and Elijah appear, speaking "of his departure, which he was to accomplish at Jerusalem".
A cloud covers him, and a voice from heaven says: "This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!"
Thomas Aquinas considered the transfiguration "the greatest miracle" because it complemented baptism and revealed the perfection of life in Heaven. In 2002, Pope John Paul II introduced the Luminous Mysteries in the rosary, which include the transfiguration.
