In today’s Gospel, we learn about the divine mercy of Jesus for suffering humanity. We all need Christ's compassion because of our inclination to sin and because of the many times we, unfortunately, give in to that inclination. Nothing but the mercy of God can save us from our own dysfunctions. But, mind you, that mercy is available, if only we ask for it. Like the leper in today's Gospel reading, he must firmly believe in the power and the mercy of Jesus. "If you will, you can make me clean," was his approach to Jesus. This week, during the celebration of the Presentation of the Child Jesus, which is the fourth Joyful Mystery we pray today, we saw how the prophet Simeon witnessed God's light, revelation, and glory through his eyes. Simeon also foretold to Mary (as written in Luke 2:35) that a sword would pierce her heart, "so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed." Mary, the mother of Jesus, was aware of our weaknesses and sins then and still is today. She participates in the eternal mission of healing and redeeming us from our sins. Sin destroys our connection to divinity and makes us unhappy and miserable. We can be lost until we ask for forgiveness, repent, and make amends in our lives. On this day, February 3rd, the Catholic Church gives a "Blessing of the Throats" in honor of St. Blaise (or Blase), a fourth-century physician, bishop, and martyr from Armenia, traditionally venerated due to many cures attributed to him. From the eighth century, St. Blaise has been invoked on behalf of the sick, especially those afflicted with diseases of the throat. Today, on his feast day, it is customary to bless the throats of the faithful with two candles tied together with a red ribbon to form a cross. The rite of the blessing of the throats takes place before or after Mass. The priest or deacon places the candles around the throat of whoever seeks the blessing, using the formula: "Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you free from every disease of the throat, and from every other disease. In the name of the Father and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit. R. Amen." Thrown into prison and arrested for his holiness, Blaise healed fellow prisoners, including saving a child who was choking on a fish bone; this led to the Blessing of Throats on Blaise's feast day. This is another "epiphany" celebration as the Christ Child is revealed as the Messiah through the canticle and words of Simeon and the testimony of Anna the prophetess. The Feast of the Presentation of the Lord occurs forty days after the birth of Jesus. It concludes the celebration of the Nativity with the offerings of the Virgin Mother and the prophecy of Simeon – that we read in the Gospel today (Luke 2:22–40). These events now point us toward Easter. The Feast is popularly known as Candlemas Day since the blessing and procession of candles are included in Mass.
