Our Lord described what happened at a Jewish wedding festival and how five foolish virgins were excluded from the nuptials. This parable of the wedding feast, as told by our Lord, describes the kingdom of God and forewarns that many Christians will be excluded from the heavenly and eternal nuptials. On receiving the sacrament of baptism, Christians start on the road to heaven; they receive the Lord's invitation to the heavenly nuptials, but this is only the beginning. We are called to prepare ourselves by living according to the law of God for the moment when the call will go forth, and each individual's fate will be decided. We have received the fullness of God's revelation and have been offered a special place in his marriage festival. Behaving with negligence will make us lose this golden opportunity. Today, in Sunday's reading, we reflect upon the Parable of the Ten Virgins, also known as the Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins or the Parable of the Ten Bridesmaids (Matthew 25:1–13). Ten virgins await a bridegroom; five have brought enough oil for their lamps for the wait, while the oil of the other five runs out. The five virgins who are wise and are prepared for the bridegroom's arrival are rewarded, while the five who went to buy further oil miss the bridegroom's arrival and are disowned. While the foolish virgins are away trying to get more oil, the bridegroom arrives. The wise virgins then accompany him to the celebration. The others arrive too late and are excluded from the event.
