Today, the dioceses of the United States celebrate Thanksgiving Day as a sign of American unity and thanksgiving to God who has given us great gifts. In 1621, colonists in New England gave communal thanks and praise to God for his abundant mercies and blessings. This became a tradition and in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln instituted Thanksgiving Day as a legal holiday. He wanted Americans to celebrate the holiday as a sign of unity and thanksgiving to God, "as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens." On receiving the sacrament of baptism, Christians start on the road to heaven; they receive the Lord's invitation to the heavenly nuptials, but this is only the beginning. We are called to prepare ourselves by living according to the law of God for the moment when the call will go forth, and each individual's fate will be decided. We have received the fullness of God's revelation and have been offered a special place in his marriage festival. Behaving with negligence will make us lose this golden opportunity.
