While we prepare for the feast day of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus tomorrow, we are invited to reflect on the mystery of forgiveness through the reading in the Gospel today (Mt 5:20-26). "Go first and be reconciled with your brother," Jesus commanded his disciples. To enter the Kingdom of Heaven, we certainly have to reconcile with one another. We must forgive everyone before entering into prayer. Lack of forgiveness blocks the flow of God's grace within us. We do not allow God's power, love, and true life to reach us. And yes, we might feel that we cannot forgive because some injustice has been done to us, and we resent it. As Bishop Barron wrote, "A good cure for this feeling is to kneel before the cross of Jesus." "What do you see there? The innocent Son of God nailed to the cross—the ultimate injustice. What does he do? He forgives his persecutors. Meditate on that, and your sense of being treated unjustly will fade away." To Jesus through Mary! Ave Maria! It has nothing to do with the erroneous interpretation of a God angry at sinful humanity, who demands a bloody sacrifice to appease His anger. This is what a pagan divinity would do, but not our Holy God. In Sunday's reading (JOHN 3:16-18), we find the answer to why God gave us His Son. "God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him." The Father sent the Son out of love to teach us that the answer is the way of merciful love, regardless of all the trials and threats we experience in life. Ave Maria! Its power to transform souls has illuminated the hearts and minds of saints over time. St. Teresa of Ávila wrote: "The three Persons are distinct from one another; a sublime knowledge is infused into the soul, imbuing it with a certainty of the truth that the Three are of one substance, power, and knowledge and are one God." St. Catherine of Siena: "Eternal Trinity! You gave us not only your Word through the Redemption and in the Eucharist, but you also gave yourself in the fullness of love for your creature." St. John Paul II: "A great mystery of love, an ineffable mystery, before which words must give way to the silence of wonder and worship. A divine mystery that challenges and involves us, because a share in the Trinitarian life was given to us through grace, through the redemptive Incarnation of the Word and the gift of the Holy Spirit." St. Faustina Kowalska: "When One of the Three Persons communicates with a soul, by the power of that one will, it finds itself united with the Three Persons and is inundated in the happiness flowing from the Most Holy Trinity, the same happiness that nourishes the saints. This same happiness that streams from the Most Holy Trinity makes all creation happy; from it springs that life which vivifies and bestows all life which takes its beginning from him."
