They both suffered and were persecuted, but they placed their confidence in Jesus Christ and now rejoice in heaven. We too must not be troubled and live in Christ and He in us. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, as we read today in the Gospel of John (Jn 14:6-14). Jesus Christ wants to live in us — as long as we freely decide to surrender. The reality that Jesus Christ is the vine and we are the branches goes beyond any moral teaching. The Son of God is the source of supernatural life in us. The Savior warns us against false prophets and ideas. "All who come before me are thieves and robbers." These thieves come "only to steal, slaughter, and destroy". Are we listening? In today's reading (John 10:11-18), Jesus reveals to humanity that He is the good shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep — for all of us, no exception. We are one flock, the whole human family, under one divine shepherd, who out of merciful love sacrifices Himself, through his sorrowful passion, for our salvation from sin and spiritual death. One of the earliest paintings of Christ in the Roman catacombs represented Jesus carrying an injured sheep on his shoulders. This is the manifestation of love that touches our innermost feelings. We have a shepherd who understands our struggle, and whose patience and mercy are infinite. He is always ready to go after every single one that falls. We recognize His voice in prayer and rejoice by knowing, that despite our offenses, He, along with His Eternal Mother, takes care here of us on Earth and has prepared a room for us in heaven. He is God becoming flesh and inviting us to live in perfect union with Him through the Holy Eucharist and His sacred heart. In today's reading (John 6:60-29), Jesus Christ says: "The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe." Many of the disciples, like many souls today, were shocked and decided to return to their former way of life, no longer walking with the Author of Life. When God incarnates, He doesn’t play small. He comes in all of His glory to our amazement. He is too much light for our limited mind. Without grace, without the Holy Spirit — and His spouse the Virgin Mary — we are unable to follow. Let's learn from the holiest disciple ever, the Immaculate Virgin Mary, all perfection, and the holiest of the Saints. Her humility — the fruit of the first Mystery today — is our starting point. "I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my Flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." (John 6:51) Jesus Christ gives Himself away as the food that the world needs for today and tomorrow in eternal life. A personal, living, incarnated God who wants to be eaten and drunk — and whose extension is the Eucharist. "Whoever eats my Flesh and drinks my Blood remains in me and I in him." (John 6:52-59) God shows His total and unconditional love and offers Himself as true food for the soul. Only through the lens of the mystery of divine mercy, we will understand why the Creator of the Universe gives us this gift. Despite our offenses and insults, the Son of God and his divine Mother calls us individually, inviting us to repent, convert and enjoy His light.
