Friends of the Rosary:
Today, January 7th, the Catholic Church traditionally celebrates the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord — the second epiphany, or manifestation, of the Lord when the entire Holy Trinity intervened. In some places, this solemnity is transferred to Monday, January 8th.
The Baptism of the Lord marks the end of the Christmas season. Then, ordinary time starts, until Lent, which this year will begin earlier: on February 14th, Ash Wednesday, and Valentine’s Day.
At Christ’s baptism, the heavens were opened and He was proclaimed the “Beloved Son” of the Father.
At our Baptism, heaven is opened to us and we became the adopted sons of God. At His Baptism Jesus prayed; after our Baptism, we must pray to avoid actual sin.
Jesus, who was sinless, did not need the baptism of John. The lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, the Word made flesh took the baptism of repentance because He laid aside his glory and humbly joined us in our sinfulness, standing with us, assuming our burden.
The Son of God freely humbled Himself at the hand of John the Baptist before commencing his earthly ministry. And by His baptism in the Jordan, Christ manifested His humility and dedicated Himself to the redemption of man. He took upon Himself the sins of the whole world and buried them in the waters of the Jordan.
Ave Maria!
