Today, January 21, the Church celebrates the feast of St. Agnes of Rome, the fourth-century virgin martyr. At the age of twelve, she freely decided to die for Christ, keeping with the words of Christ and Saint Paul.
Agnes, a young woman of incredible beauty and charm, suffered death for her consecration to Christ. And when the son of the Roman prefect offered to marry her, she replied: “The one to whom I am betrothed is Christ Whom the angels serve.”
“Agnes” means “lamb” in Latin; in Greek, it denotes “pure, chaste.”
Since the 6th century, artists have depicted Agnes with a lamb in her arms, evoking her humility, purity, and innocence. On the feast of St. Agnes, two lambs are presented in Rome.
Also, today is the feast of Our Lady of High Grace (Bienaventurada Virgen Maria de Altagracia).
