Friends of the Rosary,

In today’s gospel reading (Matthew 5:20-26), Jesus says, “Go first, be reconciled to your brother.” He calls for a virtue deeper than the virtue of the scribes and the Pharisees, a virtue more radical than the one promoted by the Jewish Law.

Jesus was concerned about human behavior, deep-seated emotions, and underlying attitudes that can eventually lead to killing. He prohibits anger, not the anger that is part of our emotional life, but the nurturing of anger that can lead to destructive action. The first act of killing mentioned in the Bible, Cain’s killing of Abel, was sprung from anger, as he was angry with his brother.

Jesus wants to renew the human heart, knowing that renewal can give rise to a new way of living that conforms to God’s will for our lives.

The Holy Spirit who lives within us can truly change our hearts. It’s the ultimate source of the deeper virtue. Each day, we need to keep praying, “Come Holy Spirit, fill my heart, renew my heart.”

Then, the face of the earth will begin to be renewed.

Ave Maria!
Jesus, I Trust In You!

Come, Holy Spirit, come!
To Jesus through Mary!
