Friends of the Rosary,
Happy New Year in Christ!
Today, January 3, Christmas Weekday, the Gospel of John (John 1:29-34) contains the first biblical presentation of the Holy Trinity. It happened during Jesus’ baptism. The sky opened, and John the Baptist saw the Spirit of God descend like a dove and remain upon him. With that, a voice from the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
Today, the first Friday of the month, we also celebrate the memorial of the Most Holy Name of Jesus. The name of Jesus means Savior, for His name expresses His mission.
Connected to the reading of today, the name of Jesus opens heaven. It kindles our hearts, clarifies our souls, and removes anger and anxiety.
Devotion to the Holy Name is deeply rooted in the Sacred Scriptures. We read in Sacred Scripture how the angel Gabriel revealed that name to Mary: “You shall call His name Jesus.”
As the Catechism states, “The name Jesus’ contains all… His name is the only one that contains the presence it signifies.”
It’s suitable for any circumstance: joy and gratitude on a trial when we have sinned. We say, “Praise Jesus,” “Jesus, help me!”, “Jesus, have mercy.”
His holy name brings love and hope. Whoever prays to the Eternal Father in the name of Jesus may have hope for every grace he asks for: “If you ask the Father anything in My name, He will give it to you.”
Whenever we pronounce it, we ought to bow our heads; for the very name reminds us of the greatest favor we have ever received, salvation.
January has traditionally been dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus.
