Friends of the Rosary,
In today’s reading (Matthew 5:1–12), Christ Jesus ascends the mountain like Moses in the Old Testament when he receives the Commandments.
The difference is that Jesus is giving a new law—or, better yet, explaining the fulfillment of the law of the prophets.
Our Lord taught us the Beatitudes, from the Latin noun beātitūdō, meaning “happy” or “blessed.”
For example, when He said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit,” it means: “How lucky you are if you are not addicted to material things.”
“Jesus is telling us how to realize our deepest desire, which is the desire for God and not for passing things that only bring temporary comfort,” wrote Bishop Barron.
