Friends of the Rosary,
Today is the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, also known as Corpus Christi, when we commemorate the institution of the Eucharistic sacrament and celebrate our faith in the Eucharist.
Saint John Paul II reminded us, “the Church solemnly bears in procession the Eucharist, publicly proclaiming that the sacrifice of Christ is for the salvation of the whole world.”
The Eucharist gives us confidence that Christ abides with us through all the sorrows of our life, sanctifying us and leading us to his presence in heaven.
J.R.R. Tolkien wrote, “Out of the darkness of my life, I put before you the one great thing to love on earth: the Blessed Sacrament. There you will find romance, glory, honor, fidelity, and the true way of all your loves on earth.”
Today’s Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ reflects the devotional movement on the Sacrament of the Altar. It’s also a doctrinal response to heretical teaching on the mystery of the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. It was extended to the entire Latin Church by Urban IV in 1264.
In the main reading of the Gospel (Luke 9:11b–17), Christ Jesus miraculously feeds a crowd of five thousand with loaves and dried fish. He makes a meal that satisfies and gives sustenance for the day to this enormous group of tired and hungry people.
Thomas Aquinas explained that the great metaphor for the Eucharist is sustenance, daily food for the journey.
As the body needs physical nourishment to get us through the day-to-day, the spirit needs spiritual nourishment.
In our spiritual life, we must eat and drink, or we will not have strength.
