Friends of the Rosary,
Yesterday, three months after the December 8 celebration of her immaculate conception as the child of Sts. Joachim and Anne, we rejoiced in the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Saint Augustine described her nativity as an event of cosmic and historic significance and an appropriate prelude to the birth of Jesus Christ.
“She is the flower of the field from whom bloomed the precious lily of the valley,” he said.
The fourth-century bishop, whose theology profoundly shaped the Western Church’s understanding of sin and human nature, affirmed that “through her birth, the nature inherited from our first parents is changed.”
Mary was born to free humanity from the ancient bondage of sin, as the Roman Martyrology stated.
Born immaculate and full of grace, Mary was conceived to be the mother of God, the spiritual mother of all mankind, and the distributor of all divine grace. With Mary, all human nature is exalted.
