May 31, 2022, Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Holy Rosary (Sorrowful Mysteries) | Pray for Uvalde’s Families

We commemorate today the Feast of the Visitation, the second Joyful Mystery. This is a medieval feast that now is celebrated between the solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord (March 25th) and the birth of John the Baptist.

Shortly after the Annunciation, the Holy Virgin, expecting a child, hurried to visit her cousin Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, who was cleansed from original sin in his mom’s womb at the words of Our Lady’s greeting. Elizabeth, feeling the warmth and kindness of the Virgin and filled with the Holy Spirit, proclaimed Mary as Mother of God and “blessed among women.”

Another truth in this event is Mary’s singing of the sublime hymn of the Magnificat, proclaiming the greatness of the Lord and announcing prophetically that she would be venerated down through the centuries.

“My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me, and holy is His name” (Lk. 1:46).
