On November 30th, Catholics worldwide celebrate the feast of St. Andrew, apostle and martyr. He was a fisherman from Bethsaida, a former disciple of John the Baptist, and the brother of Peter.
He was the one who introduced his brother Peter to Jesus, saying, “We have found the Messiah.”
Overshadowed by his brother, Andrew nevertheless appears in the Gospels as introducing souls to Christ. Today, St. Andrew’s feast is a signal of the beginning of Advent.
After Pentecost, Andrew took up the apostolate on a much wider scale, spreading Christianity in Russia and Asia minor.
He was crucified by the Romans in Patras in southern Greece on an X-shaped cross, which is now his distinctive symbol as well as the symbol of Scotland, of which he is the patron. This type of cross has long been known as “St. Andrew’s cross.”
