This December 8 is the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. The Blessed Virgin Mary was conceived free from original sin. It means that Mary received the gift of salvation in Christ from the moment of her conception.
The universal Church had this belief from the beginning. And in 1852, Pope Pius IX proclaimed this dogma in the solemn declaration titled “Ineffabilis Deus.”
It stated: “The most Blessed Virgin Mary was, from the first moment of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God and by virtue of the merits of Jesus Christ, Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin.”
Later, in her holiness and purity, Mary would willingly accept the Plan of God for her. Mary’s fiat — “Let it be done to me according to Thy Word” — would allow the coming and nativity of Jesus Christ, that we celebrate this Christmas.
