Friends of the Rosary,
Today is the Memorial Day of St Augustine of Hippo, Doctor of the Church, and one of the most influential theologians in the history of Christianity, especially regarding the Trinity, grace, and the Church.
Through incessant prayers and tears, her mother St Monica instrumented St Augustine’s conversion, along with the sanctity of Milan’s Bishop Ambrose.
Born in the fourth century in what is today Algeria, in the North of Africa, St Augustine was made bishop Hippo at the age of 41, founded religious orders, and wrote two influential books, Confessions and The City of God. He won mighty battles against heretics, including Pelagius, who denied the necessity of grace.
St Augustine–who before his reformation experienced all kinds of excesses—recognized the nature of earthly satisfactions. Restless is the heart until it rests in God, he famously stated.
