Today is the Memorial Day of St. Junípero Serra, a Spaniard, Franciscan priest who spread the faith in California and the West Coast in the eighteenth century. He founded 21 missions.
Fray Junípero Serra converted thousands of Native Americans, bringing them the gift of the true faith.
He also won their love by promoting the first significant “Bill of Rights” legislation and setting a decent standard of living.
His zeal was fed by prayer, often from midnight until dawn. He was the first Hispanic saint of the U.S.; canonized in 2015.
